Bureaucracy run amok

As I read Janet Urquhart’s article about the Aspen Historic Preservation Commission’s ruling regarding the historic designation of the Holland House, I felt that I was reading “Alice in Wonderland.” These people strongly resemble The Mad Hatter and that crew.

Reading their comments about the many changes that have been made to the building over the years reminds me that the city staff and the HPC (same members?) took exactly the opposite position in the past as justification for approving the demolition of the Paepcke house.

I watched my friends the DePagters and the Melvilles, at the Mountain Chalet, add to and improve their properties over the years. The Melvilles are upgrading the Mountain Chalet and the DePagters should be able to do the same with the Holland House.

This is truly a case of bureaucracy running amok.

I can only hope that the Aspen City Council will over-rule these idiots and let the DePagters upgrade their property.
