Building a positive foundation

Dear Editor:

The Aspen High School counseling and college counseling department would like to publicly thank the Aspen chapter of Rotary International; the Aspen Young Professionals Association; our keynote speaker, James C. Calaway; and the many volunteers who helped make Aspen High’s Career Day a huge success. We couldn’t have done this without the community’s participation and support. Hopefully our students will be able to return the favor when they join Aspen’s work force in the future.

More than 80 working professionals in the Aspen community volunteered four hours of their time to meet with our junior and senior students. A varied number of professionals represented their careers at Career Day, ranging from hairstylists and yoga instructors to doctors and Realtors. Students had opportunities to listen to and to interact with Career Day participants, to find out what those professionals do and to learn how each arrived at this point in their lives.

Meaningful activities like Career Day help our students make connections between what they are learning at school and what takes place outside of these walls. We hope to continue Aspen High’s great working relationship with the community so that we can have more events like Career Day in the future. We are grateful for their time and willingness to connect with our students.
