Build the trail, then redevelop
The other day I saw a little story in one of the papers about the Music School/ Aspen Country Day School going through the approval process for redevelopment.
It is very important that the golden shovel not break ground until the lawsuit against the county to prevent the bike trail is resolved.
I seem to remember an article this fall about how the trail would be an eyesore, cost too much, and only a few music students would use it anyway. Ever seen a bike accident after someone gets hit by a car? Unpleasant to the eye and expensive as well. What about the other nine months of the year when the bike path would be used by our own children attending ACDS, and the faculty and staff? Dick Butera, one of our towns great benefactors and visionaries, thinking from corrugated confines, generously offered to buy a bus.
The construction of this trail is crucial ” linking the ACDS/Music School Campus to the existing trail network for all to take advantage of. It also could help ease traffic.
Settle the lawsuit, and donate some money to help with the construction and design. Donate $50,000 worth of bikes for the music students to ride back and forth. Put up a plaque and a bronze bust. You could come out of this one looking like a real peach, Dick.
