Buddy Program races on

Dear Editor:July 4th is always a heartwarming time of the year for The Buddy Program. Close to 2,000 people show their support for the children of our valley by participating in two important community events: the Boogie’s Diner Buddy 5 Mile Race and Boogie’s Disco Bash for the Buddies. Our community’s dedication and commitment to mentoring is truly inspirational! A big, warm, heartfelt thank-you to each and every one of you who volunteers and helps us make a difference in the lives of the children of our valley. With 1,200 runners and 300 walkers in the race, the Fourth of July festivities were kicked off. More than 100 volunteers helped to make the event a success – many of them return volunteers. On July 6, Boogie graciously hosted the elegant Disco Bash for the Buddies at his Merry-Go-Ranch for more than 600 guests. The gala is the single biggest fund-raiser for The Buddy Program. Guests enjoyed 28 restaurants’ finest dishes, enthusiastically bid on live and silent auction items, and discoed the night away. More than 100 volunteers gave their time to make the gala such a special night. The Buddy Program relies on volunteer mentors to build character and self-esteem in young people. These mentors give countless hours and are the core of our program. Without them, we would not be able to serve the children of our valley. Many others help make a difference at The Buddy Program throughout the year and support our mission of building character and competence in young people: our board members, our national council donors, patrons, live and silent auction contributors, restaurant sponsors, race sponsors and race participants. Their dedication and energy means so much to us.There is one individual who stands out as the “mentor to the mentoring organization” and that is Boogie. For months, Boogie has given many hours to sell almost every gala ticket. From his heart, he is not shy about asking his friends to support the program because he knows who the gala benefits: the kids. Handily he sells out the gala because people know how enthusiastic he is about making a difference in a child’s life. Boogie has taken The Buddy Program under his wing and transformed it into the wide-reaching organization it is today. With his commitment and passion, The Buddy Program is connecting with more than 500 children, Big Buddies and families in our valley. Boogie has created a legacy that will last for many years to come.Thank you to everyone who helps us make a difference in the lives of the children of our valley.Lisa ChilesExecutive Director, The Buddy Program
