The Buddy Program is inviting families and neighbors to come together for a festive evening of culture and connection at its second-annual Noche de Lotería on Friday, April 26.

This free, family-friendly event begins at 6 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Community Center and aims to create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for all ages.

“It’s really just us trying to connect with the Hispanic community that we have in the valley,” said Jennifer Balmes, marketing and communications manager for the Buddy Program. “In the Buddy Program, a lot of the families and a lot of the youth that we work with are members of the Latino community, and we are trying to connect with them.”

The centerpiece of the evening is Lotería — a traditional Mexican game similar to bingo — played in multiple rounds with prizes, a taco bar, and light refreshments. Whether guests are seasoned players or new to the game, the evening is designed to be inclusive, joyful, and deeply rooted in community.

Balmes emphasized that events like Noche de Lotería offer more than entertainment — they create opportunities for genuine human connection.

“We noticed what really works are these in-person events,” she said, noting that participants can expect an evening of conversation, laughter, and shared experiences.

Though the evening is free to attend, the Buddy Program is also using the event as a modest fundraiser.

“This is a free event, but when people want an additional playing card, we are asking for a suggested five-dollar donation,” Balmes said. “All the proceeds go to improving and giving more access to youth and families in our mentoring program.”

Support for Noche de Lotería comes from a coalition of local sponsors including Glenwood Springs Ford, Iron Mountain Hot Springs, Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, and community members Sarah Clark and Mark Iola. Their contributions help ensure the event remains accessible and celebratory.

“This is a way to celebrate this culture that we have in the valley and the awesome population of Latino residents,” Balmes said. “Lotería is a super traditional game and is something that hits close to home.”

She added that she herself played the game growing up.
