Budding gardens

Dear Editor:

There are now two community gardens in the town of Basalt. This will be the fourth year for a small neighborhood garden on Homestead Drive. The other garden, called Grace-Shehi, after the names of the original settlers, is in its second year and is on a half acre of very fertile, sunny land just west of Basalt High School.

There is still very limited space available for new gardeners at the Homestead site and plenty of space at Grace-Shehi, which is open to everyone in the midvalley as well as commuters to Basalt.

At Grace-Shehi, a small group of gardeners even cultivated some plots of vegetables for the Lift-Up food pantry last year. Experienced gardeners are always happy to share their experiences and knowledge with others. If you would like to grow your own vegetables or flowers, call me at 970-927-4629 or email basaltcommunitygardens@gmail.com.

It’s a great deal: You get to exercise your body as well as your green thumb, meet other gardeners and provide yourself with the freshest food in the valley. Dig in!
