Buddies make it official

Aspen Times Staff Report

This month’s Buddy of the Month is Senior Buddy Laura Hyams and Junior Buddy Blanca “Chulla” Salas.

Laura and “Chulla” met each other about 10 months ago, but in July became official “Buddies.” They decided to become buddies because they had a lot in common and a good relationship.

Their favorite things are going to Boogie’s, swimming, bowling and doing the activities provided through the Buddy Program. Last month they attended a ceramics class at Anderson Ranch with all the other buddies in the program. They plan on skiing together this winter.

Even though Laura and “Chulla” knew each other beforehand, they think everyone should have a buddy even if they don’t know each other in the beginning. “We think this program is awesome because we get the chance to make each other’s lives better,” said “Chulla.” “So we say, get a buddy soon.”

Anyone interested in becoming a mentor to a local youth should call 925-5717 or 927-1001. The Aspen Buddy Program/Mid-Valley Buddies is a nonprofit mentoring organization that provides positive role models to local young people in need of support and companionship within Pitkin County, Basalt, and El Jebel. The commitment is only three hours per week – 1 percent of your time.

The Buddy of the Month is a monthly feature, sponsored by the Aspen Buddy program, MidValley Buddies and The Aspen Times.
