Brown bag it, Barwick |

Brown bag it, Barwick

Dear Editor:

Last night in his address to Congress, Obama called for “honesty and accountability.” I find that $250,000 spent for local eating out by city of Aspen employees an abuse of tax dollars. When I was a federal employee with the FDA, a per diem allowance for food only occurred ONLY when we were traveling overnight.

I ask for City Manager Steve Barwick to explain who and how this local eating out program was authorized. In the midst of this economic downturn, this is an extravagance. The poor ethics of not keeping the public informed and having this “discovered” is similar to the Burlingame fiasco. At 270 City of Aspen employees and $250,000 spent, that’s about $930 per employee! Let’s give local citizens some tax relief and ask Steve Barwick to brown bag it with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

And, Steve, FDA employees chip in and pay for their fellow employee’s farewell parties.

Tom Kurt
