Aspen Times Staff Report

Aspen’s annual community picnic will take place today, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Paepcke Park.

In conjunction with the event, the Aspen Historical Society has arranged for photographer John Kelly to take a community portrait. Everyone is welcome to pose for the group shot.

The photo will be taken at 5:30 p.m. sharp. Aspen’s seniors are especially encouraged to pose. Special seating and assistance will be available at the picnic for seniors; anyone who needs transportation should call the senior center at 920-5432.

Parents with new Aspenites, born in 2000, are urged to bring the new generation to be part of the portrait, as well.

Copies of the photograph can be ordered from the historical society.

Aspen Caterers will provide food for the first 1,000 guests, compliments of the city. The menu includes roasted chicken, cajun catfish, red beans and rice, coleslaw, corn muffins and watermelon.

Music will be provided by the Flying Dog Bluegrass Band. Other fun will include a watermelon seed-spitting contest, rides in the city’s electric car and various giveaways. The city’s historic fire engine No. 1 will be on display, and information on a variety of city services will be available.
