Bright idea

Dear Editor:

While the energy conserving light bulbs that the Aspen Skiing Co. sent to homes throughout the valley claims to be directed towards raising environmental awareness, ultimately it appears to be nothing but a marketing gimmick. If the Skico was really concerned about the energy wasted through regular watt light bulbs, maybe they should also be concerned about the energy and waste produced in order to deliver these light bulbs throughout the valley.

Not only are the bulbs wrapped in not one, two, three, but four layers of boxes, with no indication that they were made with recycled paper, but they were printed in China. So, after traveling across the globe using jet fuel, these bulbs made their way to ours homes in UPS trucks emitting gasoline fumes. (As a side note, choosing the holiday season for this marketing project had our UPS delivery agent working a 16 hour shift into the night.)

A good idea in theory, Skico, to get the word out about energy conservation, but by the time the word got to us you have most likely wasted more energy than the bulk of these light bulbs could save in months. Next time, maybe try handing out energy efficient bulbs on the slopes, minus the extravagant packaging, with an explanation printed on recycled paper, and actually practice what you are trying to preach.
