Bridge plans necessary

Aspen Times writer

Dear Editor:(This letter was originally addressed to Bert Myrin.)There are no plans for a six-lane bridge. The bridge will have two vehicle lanes and two bus lanes. Additional footage is for safety. I guess one can characterize the bridge width as a six-lane bridge, but that would be incorrect.I know that you and others have a concern that moving the two lanes for auto and two lanes for bus closer to town will put pressure on building across the Marolt. I don’t share this concern. The bridge needs to be replaced, and it is required to have a transit component. A two-lane bridge would not meet that standard. For all practical purposes, a two-vehicle/two-bus lane highway configuration exists on the downvalley side of the bridge, and one could construe the roundabout as having four lanes. I have not changed my position on the Marolt, but I believe moving forward with the new Maroon Creek bridge is necessary.Helen KlanderudAspen mayor
