Breaking news: Snowmass lift operator dies from ski accident

A 47-year-old male Snowmass lift operator died Thursday while skiing in the Cirque Headwall at Snowmass, Aspen Skiing Co. said Friday.

The cause of death is undetermined.

According to a press release issued at 6:47 a.m., “Snowmass Ski Patrol was called at 1:50 p.m. by another skier. The man was unconscious and unresponsive when Patrol arrived at the scene. They began advanced life saving procedures and continued their efforts as he was transported to a waiting ambulance. The man was a skier and was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.”

It was the fourth death within in-bounds Skico areas this ski season. The previous three accidents involved the victims running into trees.

“This is a shocking and tragic incident that deeply affects everyone in the company,” said Mike Kaplan, Skico’s president and CEO. “Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his family and friends at this time.”
