Boy struck on 82 is recovering

A 10-year-old Carbondale boy who was struck by a car early Fridaymorning on Highway 82 was in “good condition” Sunday at St. Mary’sHospital in Grand Junction, reported a hospital spokeswoman.”He’s in good condition with a closed head injury,” she said.”He came out of critical care [Saturday], and he’s now on thepediatric ward.”The boy and his father, Rickey Brunty, 41, were both hit Fridayat about 5:30 a.m. as they crossed the highway just downvalleyfrom the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport entrance, according to theColorado State Patrol.Rickey Brunty suffered a broken leg in the accident, accordingto a press release from the patrol.”It appears Mr. Brunty was attempting to lead his son across thehighway when they were both struck,” said the patrol.The patrol will not cite the driver of the vehicle that struckthe pair, the agency said.Rickey Brunty is suspected of having been under the influenceof alcohol when the accident occurred and, as a result, is facingchild-abuse charges, according to the patrol.The accident remained under investigation yesterday. A patrolspokesman said no further information about the incident or thepending charges was available Sunday.
