Boy drowns in C’dale

A 1-year-old boy apparently drowned Sunday in an irrigation ditch about five miles south of Carbondale.

Gentry McKellip was playing with his father, Jerry McKellip III, when he apparently fell into the ditch, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office. When it was noticed the child was missing, the family began a search, enlisting the help of neighbors.

A release from the sheriff’s office says a neighbor found the child under water in front of a dam, about a half-mile from where he would have fallen into the ditch. The neighbor unsuccessfully attempted to revive the child, then carried him to Highway 133, where he flagged down Garfield County deputies who had responded to a 911 call.

The deputies continued efforts to revive the child until an ambulance arrived. Continued efforts to revive the boy at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs were unsuccessful. Dr. Steve Ayers, of the Pitkin County Coroner’s Office, said the boy was declared dead at about 8 p.m. Sunday at Valley View Hospital.

Officials believe the death was accidental. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office and Pitkin County Coroner’s Office are investigating. The actual cause of death has not been released.
