MINTURN, Colo. – A rescue team spent more than three hours Wednesday rescuing an 18-year-old man from the Cross Creek Trail near Tigiwon Road, just outside of Minturn.

The man was hiking with family members when he grabbed onto a boulder for support near a steep incline, said Shannon Cordingly, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. The 3-foot boulder fell on him and, though his family members were able to free him from the rock, the injured hiker couldn’t walk out on his own, she said.

Vail Mountain Rescue, Eagle River Fire Protection District, Eagle County Ambulance District and the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office all responded, bringing the hiker out of the forest at about 4:30 p.m. Rescuers had to hike more than two miles up the trail to the man and then carry him out, Cordingly said. He was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, she said.
