Boom times?

Dear Editor:In response to Gerald L.K. Smith’s recent letter (Aspen Times, June 29) concerning these “boom times” in America, I would just like to welcome Mr. Smith back to the United States after what appears to have been a lengthy sojourn abroad. Just to catch you up on some recent events, Mr. Smith: Our economy has been diagnosed as being in a recession (not without coincidence) since roughly the inception of the new Bush administration. Jobless rates are at or near record highs for the third consecutive year. Government spending is apparently motivated without conscience or regard to deficit. Most of our former allies are now firmly against us. Oh yeah, and Santa Claus doesn’t really exist.Criticize Michael Moore’s new movie as being a bit over the top and I’ll agree. Point out that the economic bleeding has stopped and we’re at least stabilizing, and I’ll digress. Call this age in America “boom times” once more and I’ll wet myself with laughter. It now goes without argument that for every bleeding heart liberal who can’t see the taxes for the trees, there’s a fall-in-line conservative who will swear there’s gold at the end of that elephant’s tail.Justin Oliver PinyonAspen
