Bond set for Basalt man

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

ASPEN ” A judge Tuesday set bond at $25,000 for a Basalt man accused of multiple offenses, ranging from driving under the influence to violation of bond conditions.

Mark Stephen Michalenko, 42, was arrested Dec. 22 for alleged events in Snowmass Village. He was reportedly in an accident that injured a woman.

Michalenko allegedly did not have insurance at the time, was driving without a license and was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He also faces a number of other related counts.

Deputy district attorney Richard Nedlin said at an advisement hearing before Judge James Boyd in district court that Michalenko knew he should not have been drinking and driving, given his history.

He said Michalenko has three prior felonies, including an attempted sexual assault in 1989, and was a potential flight risk. Nedlin also said Michalenko had committed a felony while out on bail for an incident “almost identical to this case.”

He said given his history Michalenko was not eligible for probation and faced a number of years in prison.

Boyd then set the bond amount at $25,000. He also set a subsequent hearing Jan. 5.
