CASTLE DALE, Utah ” The body of a Colorado woman missing since November has been found in a slot canyon in eastern Utah.

Emery County Sheriff Lamar Guymon says three hikers found the body of Rose Backhaus in the upper Chute Canyon area on Saturday. Law enforcement officials recovered the body the next day.

Backhaus, who was 54 when she disappeared, was last seen Nov. 16 when she checked out of a Moab hotel and left the parking lot at a canyon trailhead.

Guymon says crews searched for Backhaus for about a month after she was reported missing and intermittently after that.

Her body was taken to the Utah medical examiner’s office for identification.

Guymon says Backhaus, of New Castle, Colo., likely got lost in the canyons and died of exposure.
