CARBONDALE – A man was found dead west of Carbondale, just off Highway 82, Wednesday afternoon.
Garfield County Sheriff’s investigators responded to the area near the intersection of County Road 100 and Lion’s Ridge Road, west of Highway 82, at about 2 p.m., after someone called in a report of a body near the road.
Deputies found an unidentified dead man with a gunshot wound, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Tanny McGinnis said. Information on the location of the bullet wound or the identity and age of the victim were not released Thursday, pending an autopsy.
The Garfield County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy was performed Thursday, and that it would be a few days before the report was complete.
McGinnis wouldn’t say if investigators suspect the person to be a victim of homicide or suicide, but said an investigation is ongoing.
“Any time there is an unattended death, it’s investigated like a homicide until there is reason to believe that it is not a homicide,” she said. “Initial investigating officers did not see anything that seems suspicious.”
