Body found in reservoir ID’d as C’dale man
A man found dead in Ruedi Reservoir on Monday has been identified as Carbondale resident Dan Wayne Smith, 54.Although the exact cause of death hasn’t been released, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Ron Ryan said there is no sign of foul play thus far.”We don’t want to close doors on anything, but there is nothing that suggests foul play at this point in this investigation,” he said.Smith’s body was found floating near his houseboat, which had drifted up against the western shoreline near the dam. Pitkin County deputy George Kremer said boaters heard Smith’s dog barking from the deck of the boat; they found Smith’s body in the water when they went to investigate.Ryan said Smith’s body was attached to the boat by a rope that was around one of his arms. The other end of the rope was tied to a cleat on the boat’s deck. There is no evidence that anyone else was on the boat with Smith at the time of his death, according to Ryan.Smith’s body was retrieved from the water with help from Basalt Fire and Rescue and taken to Farnum Funeral Home in Glenwood Springs. An autopsy was performed Tuesday afternoon.Ryan said it appeared Smith had been dead for just more than a day. He would not comment about whether drugs or alcohol were involved, nor whether Smith might have committed suicide.Naomi Havlen’s e-mail address is email@example.com
