BLM tightens rules on campsite use

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management is changing its rules for camping on lands under its purview in Colorado in an attempt to curb illegal, long-term camping.

The rules go into effect July 12, extending the amount of time campers must move away from a site after 14 days, and the distance they must move.

After 14 days at a campsite on BLM land, campers must relocate at least 30 miles away – up from three miles in the current regulations, adopted by the agency in 1990.

In addition, campers cannot return to a site once their 14 days is up, for 30 days – up from seven days under the old rules.

Other amendments to the regulations address the establishment of unattended campsites that are set up in order to secure a site for later use.

“These rules go a long way in our efforts to effectively reduce the impact of long-term camping and illegal occupancy on public lands,” BLM Chief Ranger John Bierk said in a press release. “We hope these rules will resolve any inconsistency or confusion that existed in the past with respect to camping and occupancy on public lands.”

Under the old rules, some individuals established long-term residency on BLM land under the pretext of camping, according to the agency. Such uses often interfered with legitimate recreational use of public lands, created sanitation and other health concerns, and caused damage to resources resulting from illegal campfires, trampling of vegetation, vehicle use and trash dumping.
