BLM offers oil, gas leases on 58,000 acres in Colorado

Aspen, CO Colorado

DENVER ” Federal officials will offer oil and gas leases on about 58,000 acres of public land in a May 14 auction.

The 57 parcels are spread primarily across western Colorado.

The Bureau of Land Management sold leases on about 11,000 acres in its quarterly auction in February. The sale netted about $250,000.

Nearly 122,000 acres of proposed leases were withdrawn from the February auction. About 33,000 acres were yanked because some of the land was in roadless forest areas the state wants to protect.

The Forest Service withdrew other parcels after counties raised questions about water quality and other issues.

The BLM oversees management of all federal minerals, but other federal agencies are responsible for proposing leases on land they manage.
