Crews evacuated the Black Nugget bar in Carbondale on Monday night after smoke was reported inside the building, though no fire was found inside the structure.
According to the Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District, firefighters responded around 9:30 p.m. and worked to identify the source of the smoke. The building was evacuated as a precaution, and a fire crew remained on site overnight to conduct a fire watch.
Carbondale Fire Public Information Officer Jenny Cutright said Tuesday the smoke was traced to a fire that started inside a sidewalk grate on the east side of the building along Fourth Street, closer to Steve’s Guitars. The fire pulled smoke into the bar through the building’s ventilation system.
“There was never actually any fire inside the building,” Cutright said. “There’s just some minimal smoke damage.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and fire crews have since cleared the scene.
