Biggest problem in politics
Dear Editor:What I find most distressing about politics today is the complete lack of respect for dissenting opinions. When can we start, as a nation and as a community, to better treat those with whom we disagree with a level of respect that suggests that we believe their intentions are well-meaning – but oh, by the way, we may happen to disagree and here is why?Instead, politicians and their staunchest backers rip each other apart, calling each other liars, traitors, morons or worse. By doing so they discourage good people from ever considering getting into the game and, in my view, thereby remove what is the most appealing aspect about a democracy. It is those who spew the personal hate and vitriol that most demean the system and tear the fabric of democracy. It is those who resort to personal insults and attacks who leave the impression with me that their positions on policy must be the weakest. I think that it is human nature to be most willing to learn from those who are willing to listen. For those of us who wish the current administration to consider points on the environment and other issues, my wish would be to debate the issues on their merits and leave the personal attacks and insults aside. In my experience, common ground is easier to find if people are looking to find it together. I think that approach increases the chances of convincing those in power and ultimately provides greater incentive for good people to enter politics. It is those on both sides lobbing hate bombs and personal insults that are the biggest problem in American politics today.Scott WriterOld Snowmass
