Bigger not always better

Dear Editor:

Charlie Leonard’s column about the proposed airport expansion is a wake-up call to our (Aspen’s) ever-delusional dreams of grandeur (“Airport expansion boggles the mind,” April 19, The Aspen Times).

I have spent more than the past 40 years living in and traveling from the Aspen airport to points all over the world, but especially to the Santa Barbara airport. Its new airport, at 75 percent the size of the Aspen proposal, is huge. Perhaps our plan is a play to double the airport as a convention space.

We could learn a lesson from Santa Barbara and its decidedly tourist-friendly approach. Bigger is not the answer. We could try for appropriate. As for free, to be paid for by our federal government – again, Leonard is correct. We, the taxpayers, ultimately do fund all programs.
