Big weekend ahead

Dear Editor:

This is a weekend of firsts for the Roaring Fork Valley. And it is all a result of community cooperation, volunteerism and big ideas!

The first-ever free Aspen Ideas Block Party, presented by Team Chamken, a Roaring Fork Leadership team of seven local volunteers and the Aspen Ideas Festival, is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Rio Grande Park in Aspen.

This event is underwritten by Obermeyer Asset Management, with speakers from the Aspen Ideas Festival and more than 40 local volunteers to support it. And it’s free! The Block Party also includes a Trade-show for Ideas with 18 local organizations pitching in to provide interactive activities for the community.

On Saturday, The Buddy Program launches its first-ever Lemonade Day project with 350 local kids setting up Lemonade stands throughout the valley. Some of the budding entrepreneurs will be selling lemonade at the Buddy Program booth at the Block Party on Sunday, as well!

The beautiful and impressive new John Denver Sanctuary, wetlands and gardens, created by Jeff Woods’ team at the city of Aspen Parks Department, is being dedicated at 12:30 p.m. Sunday east of the Block Party at Theater Aspen.

So, join us for a weekend of community connection and accessible firsts in the Roaring Fork Valley! Everyone is invited. Rain or shine, bring your blanket, umbrella and big ideas to the first-ever, free Aspen Ideas Block Party. And, buy a lemonade too! See you there!
