Big Read begins this month
September 17, 2009
ASPEN – The Aspen Writers’ Foundation this month is launching the second Big Read in the Roaring Fork Valley.
An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), The Big Read is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. This community-based reading campaign aims to get as many people as possible in a given area – including reluctant or lapsed readers – reading and talking about the same book at the same time. Over the next two months, the Aspen Writers’ Foundation is inviting the people of all ages and abilities throughout the valley to read “To Kill A Mockingbird,” by Harper Lee.
The Wrtiers’ Foundation will co-host a theatrical adaption by the Montana Repertory Theatre of the novel at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, at the Wheeler Opera House. The event is open to the public.
Refreshments, free copies of the book, readers’ guides, and Big Read community calendars will be available following the performance. Tickets are $25-$30 and may be purchased through Aspen Show Tickets at the Wheeler Opera House by calling 920-5770 or by visiting aspenshowtickets.com. Heavily discounted group sales are available by calling the Writers’ Foundation at 925-3122.
The event runs through Oct. 31. For more information on the event, visit http://www.neabigread.org/communities/?community_id=1809.
