Big plans get first look in Snowmass

Plans for a second conference center, lodge and possibly a private club in Snowmass Village were presented to the Town Council Monday for some early input.

Council members were broached in the early stages of planning for the project because the developers would like to incorporate a three-quarter acre of land owned by the town into the plan. That parcel is currently being used chiefly as a parking lot for the Krabloonik restaurant and dog-sledding operation.

“I have mixed feelings about this,” said Councilman Kevin Costello. “We’ve got an awful lot of growth right now and I’m not sure a new lodge or a new institute is needed.”

There are five major components to the project, slated for property adjacent to The Divide subdivision and the Krabloonik restaurant on the western edge of the town.

Proposed is a business conference center similar to the Aspen Institute, that would be called the Snowmass Institute. The prospective head of the center, Peter Moore, would like the Snowmass Institute to be about 15,000 square feet in size. It would host business seminars, chiefly in the summer, according to Moore.

As a seasonal complement to the institute, a private dining club was suggested to operate principally during the winter months.

Also proposed is an “intimate, out-of-the-way” lodge adjacent to the Krabloonik restaurant. The lodge would consist of a maximum of 20 rooms.

The Krabloonik dog-sledding operations would remain; possible expansion of the Krabloonik restaurant is also proposed.

The final piece of the proposal depends on The Divide Homeowners Association. Developers plan to discuss “maybe creatively swapping” parcels of land with The Divide in order to most efficiently add the new facilities while retaining the net acres of open space in the area.

The collective initial reaction from the Town Council yesterday ranged from reserved to obvious opposition.

“I think 15,000 square feet is somewhat atrocious. That’s huge,” said Councilman Jack Hatfield. “I’m also concerned about what happens to a community [with the addition of another private club.] Personally I’m interested in what’s available to the public all the time. I don’t like the concept of private clubs in Snowmass Village.”

But since plans for the new project are still in the formative stages, council member agreed to allow designers to fit the town’s land into the project planning. The developers will return with firmer proposals after discussions with neighbors.
