Biden supports women

Dear Editor:

Some of you may recall Sen. Biden and others referring to the “Violence Against Women Act” (VAWA) but no one explains what it is. This legislation that originally passed, I believe in 1994, more than any other single thing has been responsible for changing and in many cases saving the lives of countless women and children across the country.

VAWA has funded the creation of, and continues to fund, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, Rape Crisis and Domestic Violence shelters and programs throughout the country; and training for the criminal justice system so that violence in the home would be treated as the crime that it is. I won’t bore you with all the specifics but if you are interested you can google Violence Against Women Act and find the 2008 version.

Who do we have to thank for this? Sen. Biden, who authored and worked across the aisle getting this legislation passed, so much so that we used to refer to this as the Biden Bill. Sen. Biden has said that getting this legislation passed was his proudest moment in Congress.

Over the past 25 years, we at RESPONSE have seen an enormous change in the attitude toward domestic violence from law enforcement and the public at large. I credit Sen. Joe Biden for being instrumental, if not downright responsible, for this change.
