A Basalt woman was in critical condition Monday after being hit by a vehicle while bicycling Saturday evening near Carbondale.Sharon Johnson, 48, was in the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. The accident occurred on the south Highway 82 frontage road, also known as Old Highway 82, about a half mile east of Catherine Store Road.Johnson was riding west around 5:30 p.m. when she was hit by a Dodge Caravan driven by Pamela Maine, 53, of El Jebel, according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol. Johnson was struck from behind and she landed in a ditch. She was taken to Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs before being flown to St. Mary’s.Capt. Barry Bratt of the state patrol said an investigation is ongoing and charges are possible.”It would depend on the injuries of the bicyclist,” he said. “But most likely we’d be looking at something along the lines of careless driving resulting in injury.”Road conditions likely did not play a factor in the accident, Bratt said. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, either. An investigator specializing in accident reconstruction has been called in.A nurse in St. Mary’s intensive care unit, citing the patient privacy law, would not release information on Johnson’s injuries.
