BHS girls rout Rangely 68-29

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Basalt High School girls basketball team improved its league-best record to 7-1 with a 68-29 rout of Rangely Saturday.

Basalt got off to a 19-8 lead through the first quarter and then shut Rangely out in the second, posting a 36-8 lead at the half.

“I was pleased with the defense the girls played,” said coach Debbie Cain, “but I think [Rangely] is a much better team than the score shows.”

Basalt junior Stefanie Kemp led the Longhorns in scoring with 21 points, followed by Heather Kappeli with 17 and Molly McGrath with 7.

“Ten out of 11 players who played all scored,” Cain said. “It’s always nice to go to the bench and get some production.”

Basalt travels to Olathe Friday for its first Class 3A Western Slope League match of year and then travels to Gunnison Saturday for its second league contest.

“None of these games that we’ve played really matter,” Cain said. “It all starts on Friday, and we’ve talked about this being the start of the season. We have two tough teams back to back on the road, so this will be a good test for our team.”
