BHS girls perfect in league

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Basalt High girls basketball team continued its dominating season with two decisive wins over league opponents Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, Basalt shot 61 percent from the field in a 92-23 rout of Meeker. On Saturday, the Longhorns bested Paonia by 17 points.

Basalt coach Debbie Cain described Friday’s game as “one of those nights where everything clicked for us.”

Basalt couldn’t miss a shot in the first half, recording an 82 percent average from the field, and controlled the game from start to finish. All Basalt’s bench players figured into the action, Cain said, and 10 of 12 players contributed to the scoring.

Longhorns Stephanie Kemp and Heather Kappeli each netted 19 points, including a 3-of-4 effort from 3-point land for Kappeli. Junior Molly McGrath added 18 points and recorded 9 assists.

Hosting Paonia Saturday, Basalt again experienced foul trouble in the first half but still led 28-27 through the first half.

“Paonia shot 10-of-12 free throws in the second quarter, and that’s what kept them in the game,” Cain said. “But the girls had a great second half. They did a good job of not fouling, and we held them to only 13 points” in the 57-40 win.

Kappeli knocked down 20 points, and Kemp added 13. Megan Macuen netted 10 points.

The two wins boosted Basalt’s record to 4-0 in league, 11-1 overall. Basalt hosts Hotchkiss (2-2 in league) Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

“I’ve seen them play and they’re a good team,” Cain said. “They’re quick and they move the ball up the floor well.”
