Beware of the bluegrass

Dear Editor:

A fascinating book published last year, “Weeds,” by British nature writer Richard Mabey, unmasks “Kentucky bluegrass” as Poa pratensis, an English invasive with “an adventurous root system.” As we decide whether to allow a field of it on Watson Divide, perhaps we should worry less about the plant as a visual contaminant or enabler of polo and determine whether it will escape to join what is already a surfeit of invasive species.

Let the biologists decide.
