Beware of stimulus scams

Dear Editor:

Hot on the heels of President Obama’s stimulus package are Internet hoaxers promising your “Stimulus Package” online. The sender appears to be the U.S. government alerting you of your opportunity to receive a significant amount of money (about $12,000) as part of the national stimulus package. There is a form to be filled out and for the minor cost of about $2.95 for paperwork fees, the scammers request your credit card information, including your secret credit card verification number (the three- or four-digit number on the back of your card).

No reputable institution will ever ask for your credit card information, your Social Security number or any of your passwords. Do not use contact information provided by e-mail or on a website connected to the request; instead, check previous statements for contact information. Sites that re-direct you to an apparently authentic website are almost certainly “phishing” attacks.

As tax season nears, there will also be increased “offers from the IRS” to help you lower your tax bills and receive unclaimed refund checks ” all of which are bogus.

It is a sad fact of life out here on the Internet frontier, but snake oil salesmen are still a dime a dozen and it is up to the user to avoid these scams.

Good luck.
