Better cellphone service for Snowmass Village?

Pitkin County is in talks with a private company to improve cell coverage in Snowmass Village.

American Tower, a company that builds communication infrastructure, has approached the county with a proposal to build a cell tower on Jack Rabbit Hill, a location where the county already has a television and radio translator system.

County Commissioner Steve Childs, a resident of Snowmass Village, told the Snowmass Part-Time Residents Advisory Board about the potential project. Snowmass Village has multiple areas that lack cellphone service, something that officials have noted as not only inconvenient but unsafe.

“This would provide much better cell coverage in Snowmass and on the mountain,” Childs told the board.

American Tower still needs to submit an application with the county for the project, but planners have already begun meeting with the company, said Assistant County Manager Phylis Mattice.
