Belly Up Aspen on list of top U.S. clubs

ASPEN – Belly Up Aspen has a capacity of just 450. But now the whole world knows just how impressive a history the music club has built in just eight years.

In its April 11 issue, Rolling Stone included Belly Up, owned by Aspenite Michael Goldberg, on its list of the best clubs in America. A panel of voters that included musicians, managers, promoters and more put the local club at No. 16 on the list. A brief write-up notes that Belly Up, despite its small size, has attracted such major attractions as Jane’s Addiction, Tiesto, Pitbull and B.B. King. (The list also might have included Widespread Panic, the Flaming Lips, Seal, Skrillex and Yes.) For a “fun fact,” the article mentioned that Hunter S. Thompson didn’t like the name Belly Up and preferred The Orifice.

Topping the list was the Bowery Ballroom, a 550-seat venue on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Colorado was well represented on the list of 20; the Fox in Boulder ranked fourth, and the Bluebird in Denver was 14th. Not making the cut: the original Belly Up in Solana Beach, Calif., a sister club to the one in Aspen.
