Behrendt understands Aspens character

Dear Editor: I have known Michael Behrendt since 1971, when I moved to Aspen to join the staff of Touchstone Mental Health Clinic. Michael was on the board of Touchstone. His involvement and service in the community is one of the best examples of commitment to Aspens character and values I know of.For the better part of 40 years, Michael has owned and operated the St. Mortiz Lodge, a small affordable Aspen lodge. He knows the challenges of running a business in Aspen, and he has maintained the character of the St. Mortiz as a warm and inviting small and viable lodge. He reared two daughters here and has experienced the joy and challenge of seeing his children thrive in our beautiful environment and small town.Michael served as an Aspen City Councilman for two terms from 1973-81. He was on the City Council when Aspen adopted its Growth Management Plan, and he supported it. He supported Aspens free bus system pre-RFTA. He supported the agreement that formed the Ruedi Water & Power Authority, and he supported affordable rental housing by approving the development of Castle Ridge. In recent years, Michael has been involved in developing and building affordable housing in the I-70 corridor. He knows what can be accomplished.Michael Behrendt is a thoughtful, caring and contributing member of the Aspen community. I appreciate his view that elective office is public service. As a small lodge owner, parent, and developer of affordable housing, he will bring valuable experience and insight to the council. The St. Moritz has and continues to offer short-term affordable housing to new workers to Aspen. In addition, Michael has quietly assisted many who struggle to live here. He understands the character of Aspen, and appreciates its history. He has my vote.Helen KlanderudAspen
