Bear tips trash can, kills cub

Aspen Times Staff Report

A mother bear searching for food on Sunday pulled over a trash bin on her own cub, killing it, police said Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 720 W. Hopkins Ave., police said, where bears have a history of showing up in the early morning to forage for food in local Dumpsters.

A bear-proof trash container would not open, according to a police officer, and when the mother bear pulled it over in an attempt to force it open, “the cub was crushed.”

The cub reportedly weighed around 30 pounds and appeared healthy, according to a Colorado Division of Wildlife officer who came to Aspen Sunday morning to remove the carcass.
