Bear killed by car on Highway 82

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

PITKIN COUNTY ” A young bear was hit by a car and killed on Highway 82 Wednesday night near the Pitkin County landfill.

The 150-pound bear was hit around 10 p.m. by a motorist who immediately drove to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office to report the accident, according to sheriff supervisor Jeff Lumsden

The bear carcass was picked up by the Colorado Division of Wildlife for disposal.

Lumsden said it is not unusual for bears to still be active at this time of the year, particularly in that part of the valley, since the animals have come to rely on the dump as a food source.

Bears also have been known to feed on the carcasses of other animals killed by cars on the highway, he said, cautioning motorists to be on the alert for animals along the edge of the highway at night.
