BASALT – Robi Darcy has suspected for years that Basalt has some of the best water in Colorado if not the West. A water taste-testing competition Tuesday proved her correct.

Basalt came in second out of 16 cities and towns in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico that entered water for a taste testing at an American Water Works Association conference at Copper Mountain. Silverthorne won the competition and will represent Colorado in a national water-tasting contest later this year.

Darcy, the town’s water-quality specialist, delivered 2 liters of water in glass jars stored in a cooler to the competition. The five judges treated the water like wine samples.

“They hold it up to a light, smelled it and tasted it,” she said.

The judges even cleaned their palates with what she assumed was distilled water.

“It was really nice to watch,” she said.

And even better that Basalt snagged bragging rights. Most of the domestic water comes from a spring on Basalt Mountain. Three wells supplement the supply during irrigation months. Darcy’s job duties include adding chlorine, which is required by the state for the supply system. She just makes sure she doesn’t add too much. She prefers to let Mother Nature do her thing.

“I work really hard at not ruining the great water we have here,” she quipped.
