Basalt teacher turns in letter of resignation

BASALT – A Basalt High School teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student submitted her letter of resignation to the Roaring Fork School District on Wednesday.
The Board of Education was scheduled to discuss the case of Lauren Redfern in an executive session at its regular board meeting Wednesday night. Redfern was likely to be fired for violating school policy. Instead, the board accepted her resignation.
Redfern, 26, faces two charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, pattern of abuse. She was arrested Feb. 15 and formally charged Feb. 16. She is accused of having a sexual relationship with a male student. The relationship allegedly started when he was 17.
Redfern was a health and physical education teacher, and oversaw a study hall. She was also head coach of the girls basketball team.
