Basalt seeks applicants for vacancy

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

BASALT ” Now that the Basalt town government has figured out its residency requirements for council candidates and appointees, it is seeking applications from people interested in filling a vacancy.

Applications will be accepted until Monday, June 23, at 9 a.m. The council will fill the vacancy by July 8, according to a notice from the town.

The town sent out a notice last week that said an applicant must be a resident of Basalt for one year prior to appointment. The town has also run its elections with the one-year residency requirement. However, officials discovered last week that Basalt’s Home Rule Charter, approved in 2002, doesn’t include the one-year rule. Instead, it indicates residency is only required for 30 days.

Applicants for the position should include their name, birth date, place of residence and day-time contact information, including telephone number and e-mail address. They should state their reasons for applying for the position and any pertinent experience.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of Chris Seldin, who pursued a new judgeship in the 9th Judicial District. Seldin wasn’t appointed as judge. He said earlier he might be interested in reapplying for his council seat.

The person appointed will serve until the next regular election in April 2010.

Any potential applicant with questions should contact Town Manager Bill Efting at 927-4701.
