Basalt narrows manager field

Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

BASALT ” The Basalt Town Council narrowed a field of candidates for the town manager opening from 24 to five Tuesday evening, according to Mayor Leroy Duroux.

The council’s plan is to interview the five candidates Jan. 28 and select three finalists. They will be re-interviewed and introduced to the public Feb. 11.

State law doesn’t require the town government to release the names of finalists until the field is narrowed to three.

Duroux said he was pleased with the qualifications of candidates this time around. The opening was originally advertised in September and October and drew 18 applicants. The council offered the job to its top choice, but he declined the offer, forcing the town to renew the effort.

The position pays between $115,000 and $130,000 and an allowance for housing is possible.

The position is open because of the resignation of Bill Efting. He announced in August that he was leaving at the end of 2008 or until his replacement was in place. The council asked him to stay until the end of January when its first attempt to land a manager failed.
