Aspen Times Staff Report
Aspen, CO Colorado

BASALT ” Pitkin County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Basalt man Thursday on suspicion of sexual assault.

A sheriff’s investigator said Friday that Elidio Meraz, 33, committed the assault Wednesday.

Deputies picked up Meraz at a home near West Buttermilk, according to Ron Ryan, director of investigations with the sheriff’s office.

He was taken to Pitkin County Jail at approximately 9 p.m. Thursday, and spent the night behind bars before producing a $10,000 bond early Friday morning, officials said.

The case remains under investigation, however, and Ryan could not disclose any more information.

Meraz, who lists an address in Basalt in the police report, faces two Class 4 felony sexual assault charges and a domestic violence charge.

Deputy District Attorney Gail Nichols declined comment Friday.
