Basalt High girls host Roaring Fork Saturday

Aspen Times Staff Report

The defending 3A Western Slope League champion Basalt High girls soccer team hosts its home-opener Saturday against Roaring Fork at 11 a.m. at the BHS field.

Basalt opened its season March 15 against the larger, 4A Battle Mountain and cruised to a 5-0 win.

“It was only our third day on the grass, but Battle Mountain was in the same position,” Basalt coach Heather Walker said.

Since then, the team has been practicing mostly outdoors.

“So we’re all just ready to start playing games and getting the season going,” she said. “We’re getting bored after three weeks of just practice.”

In 3A Western Slope League action this season, each team will play other league teams twice, Walker explained.

“We play each team twice, and every game counts in league standings,” she said. “Last year, we only played some of the schools once, and the teams we played twice, only one game counted as a league match. The other was a friendly.”

Walker said the BHS field is in “decent shape.”

“It’s not too bad,” she said. “As long as it doesn’t snow anymore.”
