Basalt grinds to second victory

Aspen Times Staff Report

After knocking off defending 2A Western Slope League champion Cedaredge last week, the newly reborn Basalt High varsity football team notched its second win in a tight game vs. Eagle Valley (1-3) under the lights Friday.

The Basalt varsity (2-2), back after a three-year hiatus, came up with a game-winning defensive stop in the fourth quarter to beat Eagle Valley 14-12 at the Basalt Middle School field.

With seven minutes to play, Eagle Valley scored a TD to cut the Basalt lead to 14-12. And on Eagle Valley’s ensuing two-point conversion play, the Basalt defensive line smothered a rushing bid that would have tied the contest. On the following possession, the Basalt offense ran out the clock on the ground to hang on to the victory.

Basalt plays away next Friday at Hotchkiss.
