Basalt girls b-ball nets league wins

Aspen Times Staff Report

The Basalt High School girls basketball team opened its Class 3A Western Slope League schedule with back-to-back wins on the road this weekend.

On Friday, Basalt breezed past Olathe 46-27. The next day, Longhorn forward Stefanie Kemp scored 21 points in a 57-45 BHS win over Gunnison. Basalt improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in league contests.

“It’s always tough going on the road,” said Basalt coach Debbie Cain, “and [Olathe and Gunnison] are two tough teams. So to come away with a 2-0 start in league is great. This is the way we wanted to do it.”

At Olathe on Friday, Basalt enjoyed a 10-point advantage through the half and into the fourth quarter before putting the game out of reach.

“Our girls really picked up their defense going into the fourth, and we held them to six (points) while we scored 15,” Cain said.

Heather Kappeli led the Longhorns in scoring with 13 points. Megan Macuen and Stefanie Kemp added 10 points each, and Molly McGrath netted 8 points.

Against Gunnison Saturday, Basalt overcame injuries and early foul trouble to take a 31-17 lead at the half.

“Gunnison came out and outscored us by four points in the third quarter, but again we had another good fourth quarter,” Cain said.

Kemp led BHS in scoring with 21 points, followed by Kapelli and McGrath with 14 points. Lindsey Schiller grabbed 9 rebounds and netted 6 points.

Basalt travels to Meeker Friday for its next league game. On Saturday, Basalt opens its league schedule at home against Paonia at 6:30.
