Basalt girls b-ball drops first game

Aspen Times Staff Report

Last season, the Basalt High School girls basketball team went undefeated through 16 games en route to a second-place finish in the Class 3A Western Slope Conference.

On Friday, the lady Longhorns beat Battle Mountain to improve to 6-0 on the season. But Saturday, in a battle of the unbeatens, Basalt came up short against Moffat County, 58-50.

Moffat County, ranked No. 8 in the larger Class 4A, is the best team Basalt has seen this season, Basalt coach Debbie Cain said yesterday.

“Very aggressive and very physical,” the coach said. “They’re solid and they didn’t show any weaknesses. They outplayed us and they deserved to win.”

Basalt went down by 9 points in the third quarter, but “fought back in the fourth and came to within two points,” Cain said. “But I give [Moffat County] credit. They held us off and they shot 13 for 18 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. They answered and made their free throws.”

Against Moffat County, Stefanie Kemp led the team in scoring with 17 points. Heather Kappeli added 11 points for Basalt and Megan Macuen scored 9.

In Friday’s game against Battle Mountain, Basalt won handily 86-41. Kappeli led the Longhorns with 20 points, while Molly McGrath knocked down 19, Mariah Mulcahy added 15 and Hallie Johnson scored 13.

“We shot really well,” Cain said. “It was a good offensive game for us.”
