Basalt festival returning Aug 15-16

BASALT ” Basalt’s River Days Festival will feature a new twist when it returns to town Friday and Saturday, Aug. 15 and 16.

Midland Avenue will be closed in downtown Basalt from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday for a street fair and car show. That marks the expansion of the festival from Lions Park by Town Hall and the library.

The event kicks off Friday at 4 p.m. at Lions Park with a beer tent, dinner and music starting at 5:30 p.m. The Last Minute String Band takes the stage first, followed by Big Daddy Lee and the Kingbees at 7:30 p.m.

Events will be held in the downtown commercial core as well as in Lions Park on Saturday. The parade will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, mostly along Midland Avenue. The street fair and car show immediately follow. The bands Saturday are Frogs Gone Fishin’ at 5 p.m. and Wendy Woo and the Wood Band at 7 p.m. The full schedule and list of activities is available online at

This year’s parade theme is “Basalt is Blooming” to honor those that make the gardens in Basalt happen.

Volunteers are needed to help direct traffic and assist during the parade, as well as for a variety of events Friday and Saturday. Call the Basalt Chamber of Commerce at 927-4031 to volunteer. People who work four or more hours receive a T-shirt and an invitation to a volunteer appreciation party later this month.

River Days Festival is going green. Event organizers will eliminate as much waste as possible. Vendors will be required to purchase biodegradable or recycle utensils, cups, plates and bowls. Bins will be provided for recyclable materials like bottles and and, biodegradable food waste and biodegradable plates and bowls.
