Basalt cops step up DUI enforcement

BASALT ” Local law enforcement agencies are getting a jump on Labor Day weekend by starting saturation patrols for drunk drivers this week.

The Basalt Police Department sent notice that it will have extra officers on duty this weekend for the sole purpose of enforcing driving under the influence of alcohol offenses. The DUI saturation patrols will continue on the holiday weekend, Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

“The Basalt Police Department encourages drivers to use alternative transportation if they are inclined to drink alcoholic beverages,” the notice from the department said.

Basalt’s effort is part of a nationwide crackdown on DUI that will last through Labor Day weekend. In Colorado, the crackdown is called The Heat is On campaign. It started on Aug. 17. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado State Patrol are also paying extra attention to drunk driving during that period.
